Recognizing a Heart Attack
Heart attacks form when a blood clot blocks flow to the heart in the arteries. They occur every 40 seconds in the United States and can be minor or quite serious, and can often occur without warning. According to the CDC, heart attacks are also the leading cause of death for men, women, and individuals of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
Some conditions such as heart attacks have well-known symptoms, but they also come with a set of silent symptoms.
Signs You Should Know
The most common sign of a heart attack is sharp, intense chest pain. However, a ‘silent’ heart attack can occur without extensive pain, and your heart can still be severely damaged. In fact, studies estimate that silent heart attacks account for anywhere between 20% and 50% of all heart attacks — and can have life-altering effects.
In addition to extreme chest pain, the following are all signs of a heart attack:
- Shortness of breath.
- Weakness or fatigue.
- Feeling of unease or discomfort.
- Sweating.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Lightheadedness or dizziness.
- Mild pain in the throat or chest.
- Pain in the back or arms, like a sprained or pulled muscle.
If you have heart disease or are at an increased risk of a heart attack, be sure to know these signs and let your loved ones know about them as well, so you can seek the care you need in an emergency.
